FAQ

What is a wooden floating dock?

A wooden floating dock is a dock built with a wood frame that floats on the water’s surface using buoyant floats. It rises and falls with the water level, making it a good fit for lakes where water levels change seasonally or where the water is too deep for pipe legs or 4×4 post legs.

Can I build a wood dock myself?

Yes. Great Northern Docks sells dock plans, hardware, and tools specifically for DIY construction. Dock plans include a full bill of materials so you know exactly what to buy before you start.

What is the difference between a floating dock and a stationary dock?

Floating docks follow water level changes automatically, making them easier to manage drastic, in-season water level fluctuations and better suited for deeper water. Stationary docks are supported by pipe driven into the lakebed, allowing for height adjustment while providing a more stable feel underfoot. They are typically preferred in rough water conditions and offer greater flexibility for adding accessories.

What hardware do I need to build a wood dock?

It depends on the type of dock. Floating docks require flotation and hinging hardware. Stationary docks require leg brackets and bracing hardware. Great Northern Docks carries both, organized by dock type, and dock plans include a complete hardware list.

Wood Dock Hardware and Floating Dock Parts for DIY Builds

Great Northern Docks carries the hardware, plans, tools, and accessories you need to build a wooden floating dock or stationary dock from the ground up. Whether you’re building new or repairing an existing dock, the parts here are designed to work together for a straightforward build.

Floating dock hardware covers the flotation, hinging, and framing components needed to build a dock that rises and falls with the water. Stationary dock hardware covers the brackets, leg hardware, and bracing needed for a stationary dock anchored to the lakebed or shoreline. Dock plans are available separately with full bills of materials included.
