FAQ

What is a stationary boat dock?

A stationary boat dock, also called a fixed dock or fixed pier, sits at a set height on legs anchored to the lakebed and does not rise or fall with the water. The height of the dock can be adjusted by loosening its set screws. Great Northern Docks builds stationary aluminum docks in Maine using a 6″ tubular aluminum frame and 1.5″ Schedule 40 galvanized steel pipe legs that drive directly into the lakebed. This creates a stable, but removable platform suited for tying off boats, fishing, and waterfront recreation.

What is the difference between a floating dock and a stationary dock?

Floating docks follow water level changes automatically, making them easier to manage drastic, in-season water level fluctuations and better suited for deeper water. Stationary docks are supported by pipe driven into the lakebed, allowing for height adjustment while providing a more stable feel underfoot. They are typically preferred in rough water conditions and offer greater flexibility for adding accessories.

What is the water depth that a stationary dock can handle?

A Dura-LITE stationary aluminum dock handles up to 3-4 feet of water depth with the standard frame and bracing. With optional Hook and Lock braces, it handles 4-8 feet of water. For water deeper than 8 feet, or shorelines with water levels that fluctuate more than 3-4 feet per season, a floating dock is the better fit to leave flexibility for edge cases.

Can I install a stationary aluminum dock myself?

Most installations benefit from professional help or a second set of hands. Depending on your site conditions — water depth, bottom type, shoreline grade — installation can get complicated fast. The Dura-LITE connects with snap-on J connector brackets and adjusts with set screws, however getting the legs level and the sections aligned right is easier with an experienced installer who’s seen your type of shoreline before. We recommend reaching out to our team before you start. Call us at (207) 693-3770 and we can help you figure out whether a professional install makes sense for your site.

Do I need to remove a stationary dock in winter?

In Maine and other cold climates where lakes and rivers freeze, seasonal removal of a stationary dock is strongly recommended to prevent ice damage. Great Northern Docks Dura-LITE stationary docks are designed for easy seasonal removal — the removable decking panels lift out with latches, and the snap-on bracket system lets sections come apart without tools. In warmer regions without ice, the dock can stay installed year-round.

Can I add sections to my stationary dock later?

Yes. Great Northern Docks Dura-LITE stationary docks are fully modular. Snap-on J connector brackets let you add new sections, remove sections, or reconfigure the layout at any time without specialized tools. Standard section sizes include 4×10, 4×12, 4×16, and 6×10.

Stationary Aluminum Docks Built for Waterfronts

Great Northern Docks Dura-LITE system is a stationary aluminum dock built for waterfronts where stability matters. Stationary docks work best in water up to 8 feet deep with a lakebed firm enough to accept driven pipe legs. Sandy lake bottoms are preferred over muddy bottoms because pipe feet are much easier to remove. In areas with a substantial layer of mud, a floating dock is generally the better solution.

If you’re unsure whether your bottom conditions are right for a stationary boat dock, give us a call. We survey hundreds of Maine waterfronts every year, from Sebago to Moosehead.
