4×4 Post Driving Cap

The 4×4 post driving cap protects your post tops while you drive legs into the lake bottom. Set it over the post, swing a short-handle sledge, and the cap takes the beating instead of the wood. It’s a wear part by design. When it’s spent, you replace the cap, not the post.

Heavy Steel Construction

A Wear Part, On Purpose

The cap takes the impact so the post doesn't. When the striking face wears down, you replace the cap, which is a lot cheaper than pulling and replacing a driven post.

Pro-Tip

Sharpen the post bottom and run a garden hose at the base while you drive. The water washes soil away as you go, so the post sets with less resistance.

The 4x4 post driving cap is made of steel with a 3/4-inch-thick striking face and a 3/16-inch sleeve wall. Its outer dimensions are 5 by 5 inches, and its inner dimensions are 4.5 by 4.5 inches. It is sized to fit over most rough-cut 4x4 posts and weighs approximately 14 pounds.

Inspect the cap before each installation season and periodically during use. Replace it if the striking face or sleeve shows significant cracking, bending, or deformation that could prevent it from sitting securely on the post or distributing impact evenly.

Keep the cap dry while it is in storage. No other routine maintenance is required.

    Do I need a different cap for pipe legs?

    Yes. This cap is sized for 4×4 wood posts. If you’re driving galvanized pipe legs instead, see our dock pipe driving caps, which are sized for pipe.

    How long does a driving cap last?

    It depends on how many posts you’re setting and how hard the bottom is. This is a wear part by design. Inspect the striking face after each use, and replace the cap when you see significant deformation on the top or the sleeve.

    What is a 4x4 post driving cap used for?

    It sits over the top of a 4×4 post and gives you a flat steel striking surface for a sledgehammer. It keeps the post top from splitting or mushrooming while you drive the leg into the lake bottom, which is why it’s the post driving tool most builders reach for first.

    Will this fit a rough-cut 4x4?

    Yes. The inner dimension is 4.5″x4.5″, which fits a rough-cut 4×4. Standard dimensional lumber, which measures closer to 3.5″x3.5″, also fits with some play in the sleeve.

    What else do I need to drive dock posts?

    A short-handle sledgehammer, a sharpened post, and a garden hose to wash soil from the base while driving. For the hardware that follows, post brackets and brace clamps are in the Dock Parts Fixed Legs section.

    The Right Tool for Setting Dock Posts

    Driving 4×4 dock posts into a lake bottom by hand requires a sledgehammer, a properly prepared post, and a strong surface to absorb each strike. A 4×4 post driving cap fits over the top of the post and provides a durable striking surface during installation.

    Striking an uncovered wooden post can split or crush the wood and cause the top to mushroom. This damage will make it difficult to install post brackets and other dock hardware. The driving cap helps distribute the force of each blow across the post top, reducing direct damage to the wood.

    Before installation, sharpen the bottom of the post and position it where the dock leg will be set. Place the cap securely over the post and drive it gradually, checking frequently to make sure the post remains plumb. Where bottom conditions allow, running water from a garden hose around the base may help loosen sand or soil and reduce resistance.

    Take extra care in rocky, hard, or compacted lake bottoms. Check the post between strikes and avoid continuing if it begins to split, twist, or move out of alignment.

    The post driving cap should also be inspected throughout the installation process.
